UNCLE DREW [PG-13] C+
The summer of basketball continues. From the NBA Finals to the first day of free agency, interest in all aspects of the game has taken flight and this summer, a little extra help has come from the multiplexes. Director Charles Stone III (“Drumline”) and writer Jay Longino (“Skiptrace”) team up with a Dream Team of beloved old school greats (Shaquille O’Neal, Chris Webber, Reggie Miller, Nate Robinson, and Lisa Leslie) and a current star in disguise – Kyrie Irving as the titular street ball legend – to capture the love that inspires fans far more than concerns about the multimillion dollar salaries. There’s an underdog story involving poor Dax (Lil Rel Howery), on the verge of losing his life savings after entering the Rucker Classic tournament and losing his team to his childhood rival (Nick Kroll), that feels like a fuzzy merging of “The Bad News Bears” and “Rocky.” Stone and company spotlight the laughs over the sports highlights and wind up with a minor victory that will probably continue to score on the small screen after its run and gun attack at the box office.
