DOCTOR STRANGE [PG-13] B+
“The Matrix” meets “Inception” in Scott Derrickson’s introduction of Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme. Brilliant neurosurgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) tackles the impossible on the operating table, but must submit to belief in the mystical, after a horrific car accident damages the nerves in his hands. He sets off for the Far East, where he meets The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) and Baron Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a trusted acolyte and discovers a propensity for spells and artifacts that rivals his medical skills. Facing off against a former student (Mads Mikkelsen), Strange proves to be the next great avenging protector of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following in the footsteps of Iron Man, Captain America, Ant-Man, and the rest of the crew, but his trippy journey serves as a fascinating study in how the cinematic realm keeps expanding, thanks in large part to Marvel’s ability to seduce top-notch talent to infuse these comic book heroes with mythic flashes of genuine character and pathos.
