MASTERMINDS [PG-13] D+
It is obvious that the story of David Ghannt (Zach Galifianakis), a dedicated driver for a Southern armored-car company who falls in love with his co-worker (Kristen Wiig), gets drawn into a scheme to steal millions from the company, and winds up the target of an international manhunt, has the makings of a crazy caper. And Jared Hess, the writer-director known for the surreal comedic misadventures of “Napoleon Dynamite” would seem to be the perfect choice for this bumbling tale (imagine “Ocean’s Eleven” as the combined IQ of everyone involved in the escapades here), but somehow, “Masterminds” comes off as a broadly unfunny affair despite the presence and talents of its leads and the likes of Kate McKinnon, Jason Sudeikis, Owen Wilson, and Leslie Jones. This ends up being a sketchy comedy that someone forgot to fill in with witty details.
