STAR TREK BEYOND [PG-13] B
What does it truly mean “to boldly go where no one has gone before” when that phrase is applied to the alternate timeline reboot of a movie franchise based on a classic television series, which has spawned numerous small screen spinoffs over the years (with yet another one on the way)? That’s the dilemma faced by Justin Lin (previously linked to four of the fuel-injected installments of “The Fast and the Furious”), taking over the helm after JJ Abrams, tasked with seeking to continue developing the ongoing mythology with the familiar crew of the USS Enterprise. Working from a script co-written by co-star Simon Pegg, Lin more than capably jazzes up the action, but the narrative thrust zeroes in on the personal interplay between the characters and the actors seeking to shape these iconic figures in their own images. While “Star Trek Beyond” doesn’t quite live up to it’s title, it definitely propels this iteration of the franchise further down what looks like a long and quite successful path.
