tt,
not sure how the early draft of my comment to you on the CityBeat blog ended up printed in the paper, or why the compliment to you got left off, but here is what I thought I sent, meant for you, not the world so much (“letters@” is the email address listed for you on the CB contacts’ list) :
Have to agree with you about all four actors’ Oscars. Academy loves actors who lose 40% of their body mass to inhabit a role, so Mathew’s in. Cate should survive most recent Woody scandal. I haven’t seen all the nominated films but have found in the past it not all that necessary in picking winners; buzz is sometimes enough, and good guessing. Re. Best Pic and Director, I’ll go for the split. The Brits and foreign press are always pleased when America critically examines its history of persecution but I’m not so sure Americans enjoy doing it; nevertheless, in this instance, white guilt should prevail and, as you point out, 12 Years… has the look and feel of a Best Picture winner (and rather visceral itself). But I think voters will be more impressed with the magic Cuarón was able to achieve with what he had to work with and give him the Director nod. In any event, as usual, good job.
