Red flags immediately go off as soon as the first frames flicker onscreen. Before we see him, we understand that Sam Wexler (Josh Radnor) will be an East Coast slacker-cad on the road to redemption and that his best friend Annie (Malin Akerman), an alopecia sufferer, will have to come to grips with her own self-image issues.
It’s a little less clear how or why Mary Catherine (Zoe Kazan) will factor into the proceedings but she and her squabbling boyfriend Charlie (Pablo Schreiber) certainly have their work cut out for them because it’s so tough being cute and hip in the only big city in the world (New York, of course, minus the anthemic strains of Alicia Keys).
And even though there is a black child (Michael Algieri) who serves as a key to opening the door of Sam’s liberal life awakening (which made me want to holler), I found myself surrendering to the comfort and familiarity of the small waves in the gently rolling Happythankyoumoreplease.
Radnor, as writer-director, has fashioned an indie New York story that like most indie New York stories offers smart party scenes and subway rides with passengers afraid to meet eye-to-eye and artistic types who look down upon the regular folks. But, surprisingly, when Happythankyoumoreplease focuses on the hairless face of Akerman, a character with the ability to be more than a typical New Yorker, the actress discovers the real woman underneath the hipster vibe, the kind of woman who just might make us find and fall in love with the real city. Grade: B
